This is the gateway to Chianti Classico, one of the most famous wine regions in Italy. The black rooster symbol appears on bottles, signs, tasting rooms, and estate gates, reminding visitors they are in the historic heart of Chianti wine country.
North Chianti is a beautiful balance between convenience and atmosphere. The roads are easier than deeper parts of Chianti, many wineries are approachable, and the region offers a wonderful mix of castles, family estates, scenic lunches, and classic Tuscan villages.
A Region Between Florence and Siena
Chianti Classico sits between Florence and Siena, two cities that shaped Tuscany’s history for centuries. This location gave the region both beauty and tension. The hills were not just peaceful vineyard land — they were strategic territory. Castles, fortified villages, and watchtowers were built because this countryside mattered.
That history is still visible today. Driving through North Chianti, you pass castle wineries, stone farmhouses, ancient churches, and villages that still feel connected to the medieval past.
Greve in Chianti is often the first major stop. Its piazza feels open and welcoming, with wine shops, restaurants, and market energy. Nearby Panzano has a more intimate feel, famous for food, wine, and hillside views.
